Crate training is one of the most effective ways of potty training your puppy. Start with a small crate where your puppy will stay for several hours at a time while he sleeps or takes a break. This crate should not be to big. A small confined area like a bathroom or pen is best when you are gone all day. Your puppy should not be left in the crate all day, it should only be used for several house at a time. The most important thing to remember when training your puppy in anyway, is to praise and reward your puppy when it does what you want. Pet him/her, play with them, give them a treat which ever you prefer. You must establish a routine as to when and where you want your new puppy to go potty. The more consistent you are in the first few weeks the faster and easier your new puppy will learn.
Until your puppy is potty trained you should not let your puppy roam free in the house. One accident can greatly derail your training. If she/he is allowed to roam free it will have accidents everywhere and the habit will develop to potty wherever and whenever it wants. I am not saying you can not take your puppy out and play with it. By all mean puppies need socialization, fun, hugs and kisses. Dogs do not like to soil their own space. So as soon as you let them out of their crate they will most likely have to relieve themselves. Take them immediately to the spot you want them to learn to go potty. A potty pad, a litter box or outside. Tell them to go potty several times. When they do, praise them, play with them, pet them or give them a favorite toy. If you leave your puppy in the crate to long and she can not hold it any longer, this will also set back your progress in crate training your puppy. You want to leave her in there long enough to make her want to go when she is let out and short enough for her to learn she can hold it for certain periods of time. As the next few weeks pass you will learn when your puppy needs to go and how often. Give your puppy an opportunity to relieve herself during the day, every few hours if possibly. Give her 3 to 5 minutes to relieve herself and praise her if she does. If she does not, then return her to her crate and try it again in an hour or so. This will teach her to go when told. Once you know when she needs to go you will not need to take her out as often. Establishing a routine early in her life and giving her lots of praise for doing what you want. She will want to please you in every phase of her training. This early training will bond both of you as well. She will learn to trust you and accept your dominance over her early on. Good Luck! Learn about how pet insurance can save you money. If you compare pet insurance costs and the costs annually of Veterinary office visits you will see how you can save money. Dog insurance is great for securing some finances as well as protecting your pet.
